New Year Reading Goals and Why I Don’t Want to Talk About Them Online
Every year, people make new years resolutions to help them improve themselves. Around this time of the year, avid readers also like to set reading goals for the year.
I normally don’t make reading goals for myself, but this year I decided to change that. Even though I decided to set a reading goal for myself this year, I decided not to talk about it online.
For many years, I wanted to work on my reading speed. Improving my reading speed was last year’s goal. I achieved it, which made me extremely happy. This year, I decided to set a reading goal for myself. Normally I don’t set reading goals. My life can be quite busy so I don’t have the time to actually sit down a read like I want to. Because of this, I normally set a reading goal of finishing a novel series before the end of the year. Even though I start out with the best intentions, I always fail in my reading goal.
This year, I decided to set a goal to read a certain number of books this year. I feel confident I will be able to read the number of books before the end of the year. Since I’m a faster reader, I believe I can do it. The thing is, I go through times when I don’t want to read. During these times I’m still doing things, but my free time is normally spent doing something else.
Even though I’m motivated to read a lot, I am worried the number of books I want to read by the end of this year is too much. This is why I don’t want to talk about it online. I don’t want the judgement that comes with such a high number of books to read in a year and fail. After all, I’m not reading with the intention of making content, although I do write book reviews here on this blog. Instead, this is for me, enjoying a story in written form instead of in visual form, like a TV show or movie.
To be honest, I think to not talking about reading goals online is not a bad idea. For many, talking about reading goals online is fine. For some, like myself, it isn’t a good idea. Only the person abstaining from discussing their reading goals can truly know how their life is normally like and what to currently expect in the upcoming year. If someone doesn’t feel comfortable talking about their reading goals online, it is done not because a sort of social media manipulation. It is done because someone has no clue what to expect in the future and don’t want to return online late in the year to criticism over their failed reading goals. Some online do manipulate their followers, but I think for anyone who actually has a life offline, including working, family obligations, ect., they’d know how hard it is to maintain anything they promised online.
For me, saying that I have a reading goal, it is a large number of books, and I am fully aware I probably may not be able to reach my goal is enough for me.
That’s all for now! Thank you for reading!
