Planting a New Herb Rocket Sweet Basil

Last month, I found Herb Rockets are back in my local Dollar Tree. If you never heard of an Herb Rocket, (Or read my post about purchasing them) they are an easy way to grow herbs. There are two kinds of Rocket plant kits: Herb Rockets which grow herbs, and Flower Rocket, which grows flowers. I purchased two Herb Rockets, one sweet basil and the other parsley. Last month, I decided to try to plant the sweet basil Herb Rocket before the parsley.

The box has instructions on how to plant the Herb Rocket…

And this is what the Herb Rocket looked like when I took it out of the box…

Last year, I decided to plant the whole Herb Rocket. It didn’t work so well, so I decided to cut the Herb Rocket into strips…

Then I rolled them…

And then finally planted them in soil…

I was hoping this would help grow the herbs better. So far it did, but I did struggle after the seeds germinated. I lost many of the seedlings, but there are still some that survived. I’m still hopeful they will continue to grow, but I’m still pretty hesitant about thinking they will grow to full sized basil plants.

EDIT: In case anyone is wondering, yes, I know this isn’t the “proper” way to plant seeds. I wanted to see if what would happen if I followed the instructions on the box as exactly as possible. It was an experiment that I decided to write about in a blog post. In case anyone is wondering, the seedlings that did survive didn’t survive more than a few weeks. After this experiment, I decided to look for other ways to grow basil.

That’s all for now! Thank you for reading!

I purchased the early girl tomato rocket and was curious about how to plant this strip of seeds. In the instructions it shows it in a roll but after opening the box I wasn’t sure if I had the right one inside. After reading the review about the basil now I am not sure which one to try. If I should stumble on here again I will share the results with you all. Glenda

After trying my Herb Rocket last year, I was wondering if it would be a better idea to lay it flat and then plant it. I have a second Herb Rocket that I haven’t planted, (I was too busy to plant it) but I was thinking of laying it flat instead of rolled up. I think it might grow better that way. It is just odd how the Herb Rocket’s picture shows it rolled up and that is not how it looks like in real life!

I hope your Herb Rocket grows and produces tomatoes for you, no matter how you plant it!
