Picking Wall Paint: The Colors I’m Aiming For and Why I Picked Them

In a previous post, I mentioned I need to pick a new color for wall paint. The reason why is because I’m tired of the color the walls are. Since I still have not completely decided on what color (or colors) I want to paint the walls, I thought it may be a good post ideas to talk about the kind of colors I’m looking for and why I’m picking them.

Picking paint colors for my house has not been easy. Normally if I pick paint colors I know the style of the house and pick colors based off that. Or I have a style I want to decorate the house in and pick the paint based off that. As for this house, it isn’t as simple.

The house is what I like to call a “work in progress”. In other words, the house isn’t finished in some areas. The rest of the house is a mix of styles and whatever was available at the time to build the house. Parts of the house were finished in the 1990’s and have an 1980’s look to them. Other parts were finished in the 2000’s. Even though they don’t look like they were finished in the 2000’s, there are elements of the construction that make me look at it and say “Yep. This was was popular in the 2000’s.”

Since the house is such a mix of styles, it is hard for me to figure out what would look good across the house. Such as paint colors. After a lot of thought, I think I probably have a solution.

As parts of the house were finished, they were painted Sherwin Williams Navajo White. If you’ve seen this paint color, you probably know it is a light yellow. After years of this paint color, I’ve had enough of the yellow undertones and I want to paint it a different color.

In order to pick a new paint color, I started to look at the house’s cabinets. furniture, and anything that can’t move inside the house and tried to decide what the undertone of them. In the case of this house, everything had a either a yellow or orange undertone to it. I don’t want to get rid of the things inside the house (Unless I need to replace them) so they won’t be going anywhere. After a lot of thought, I decided to pick a paint with an undertone in a complementary color to everything in the house. In the case of my house, that color is blue.

I like blue, but I didn’t want to paint all the walls blue. Instead, I want to paint the walls either a very pale blue, grey with a blue (Or cool) undertone, or a white with a blue tint to it.

As an experiment, I decided to try my idea by painting the walls in the bathroom a white with a slight blue undertone to it. It worked really well! The color is far more white than I thought it would be, but I like the contrast between the cool toned paint and the warmer toned cabinets, tile, and other items in the bathroom. It looks more balanced to my eyes and brightens the room without taking away the appearance of the items in the bathroom. I also really like the way everything in the bathroom looks now. They seem to stand out a bit better in a subtitle way.

Since I like the way the bathroom turned out, I decided to move this idea to other parts of the house. I don’t know if it will look good everywhere in the house, but I hope the fact the paint colors I like are neutrals makes it look good. The only problem I have now is to find a different paint brand to buy. The one I bought and used in the bathroom worked well, but I also think it was kind of cheep and I have my worries about it’s durability. So, I’m looking at other brands to see which colors are available and how much I like them.

That’s all for now! Thank you for reading!
