Over the years, I’ve watched and read social media content about different things a person would repurchase if they needed to restart their collection or restore what they lost for unforeseen reasons. Usually these lists serve as a way to talk about a person’s favorite items, what they wouldn’t buy again if given the chance, and why they made this decision.

I’ve seriously considered writing these posts for some time, but I didn’t. Whenever I would try writing these lists, I felt like I came off as conceded and, to me, it sounded more like I’m bragging about owning something instead of seriously talking about the items I own and if they are worth it or not. Sometimes I was far too harsh in my review of my writing. Sometimes I wasn’t.

So, in order to test the waters of this type of post, I decided to write one dedicated to the five manga series I would repurchase if I needed to restart my manga collection over again. Although I don’t talk much about reading manga online, I do enjoy reading it… sometimes. I’m very picky about my manga because they are more expensive than an average book and series can last for many years. This is why I need to really like the plot, art, stories, ect. or else I won’t bother owning it. (I made too many mistakes buying manga I hated over the years. This is my way of avoiding the mistakes of the past and not waisting money on things I really don’t like.)

Yet, there are still series that I don’t want to live without. They make me happy to read and I enjoy owning them… even if I don’t read them as frequently as I could. So, here are five manga series I would rebuy if I needed to start my collection over again.

Cardcaptor Sakura and Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Cards

Ok, so I’m kind of cheating when I group these two manga series together, but I decided to because it is easier for me to talk about them together than individually.

Cardcaptor Sakura and Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Cards are two manga series by CLAMP, a group of four women who writers and illustrate manga. Cardcaptor Sakura is one of their best known and beloved series. It follows Sakura, a girl that uses magical powers to capture magical beings that wreak havoc on the world into cards. After capturing the the magical beings, Sakura is able to control them to fight against other magical beings that wreak havoc and/or people who try to stop her from protecting the world. Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Cards is a sequel series and follows an older Sakura as she protects the world from other dangerous threats.

I really love these manga series and tend to reread them every so often. If I had to start my collection over again, I would start shopping for them.

 

Spy x Family

Spy x Family is the most recently published manga on this list, but it has became on of my favorites. It follows a spy who poses as a family man to carry out his work. The family is one he created out of convenience for his job, but the members are not all that they seem. His wife works as an assassin, their adopted daughter has telepathy, and their dog is precognitive… and nobody, except their daughter, knows the truth.

It is both a story full of action like a spy movie would have and a lot of humor. The plot is fun and unique and the art is well done. It has become my favorite manga series that has been published in my adult years.

 

Magic Knight Rayearth

Magic Knight Rayearth is the second manga series by CLAMP. It is about three Japanese girls that are summoned to another world to save a princess. The series is known for combining the magic girl, mecha, and parallel fantasy genres, as well as the end of the journey to save the princess.

Even though this manga series is not as optimistic as Cardcaptor Sakura, I still really like it a lot. It is a story that I enjoy occasionally revisiting and want to keep in my library for many years to come.

 

D.N.Angel

I read D.N.Angel for the first time in the 2000’s and liked it a lot. It is about a boy named Daisuke Niwa who turns into the phantom thief Dark Mousey whenever he thinks of his crush from school.

The thing is I don’t read his manga as much as I do the others on this list. Yet, if I needed to restart my manga collection over again, I still want to have D.N.Angel in my collection. The reason is because of the memories I have reading it in college. D.N.Angel was one of my “comfort books”. Back then, I would read, watch, or do things that would act as a stress relief for what was going on in my life at that time. D.N.Angel is one of the manga series I would read as stress relief, but it is one of the only manga series from that time that I still want to occasionally reread. So, I would still want it in my library.

 

One Piece

The last manga series I would purchase again if I needed to start my collection over again is One Piece. The story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, known as The Straw Hats. The ultimate goal of Monkey is to find the legendary pirate treasure, called the One Piece. Finding the treasure will make the finder the King of the Pirates.

I like One Piece a lot, but I’m not as huge of a fan of it as many others. Still, I enjoy reading it a lot. The thing about One Piece is that it is a very long series. If I wanted to restart my collection, I would probably either buy my favorite story arcs as well as the first three volumes of the manga or buy the omnibuses of the volumes, which are three volumes in one book.
