5 Tips on Shabby Chic Christmas Decor
For the past few years, possibly more, it has become trendy to decorate for Christmas in a shabby chic style. I always loved shabby chic home decor. When I found this trend, I began to wonder how to buy this style of decor that would fit in with my own. Over the years, I developed some self made rules about what this trend looks like to me. This also helped me decide on what looked good with my already existing decor.
I don’t know of any official rules for this style of decor. So, I decided to write a post about my own tips for when buying this style of Christmas decor. Like with all decorations, there really isn’t any set rules. Still, I hope these five tips help anyone looking for ideas on how to find Christmas decor in a shabby chic style!
Look for Decor in Pastel Colors
One of the major hallmarks of shabby chic decor is the pastel colors. For the most part, all colors are light and airy. If you are trying to incorporate this trend into Christmas decor, look for decor in pastel colors. There could be one main color, such as a light pink, or it could be every color of the rainbow… except in a pastel shade! My personal favorite type of decor to look for are ornaments. They are easier to find in pastel colors than other decor, such as wreaths and garlands. Yet, ornaments can be used from Christmas tree ornaments to vase fillers to decorate a normal, plain garland.
Substitute Dark Golds With Champagne Gold and Other Light Colored Metallics
Shabby chic has a lot of light colors. The lighter colors also apply to metallics. If you are looking for shabby chic Christmas decor, look for decor with light metallics. These include champagne gold, silver, platinum, and even rose gold. Try to avoid darker colored metallics such as a dark gold. Darker metallics can also be worked into light colors without looking out of place. Still, if the lighter color is what is what is desired, make sure to focus more on light colored metallics than dark.
White or Flocked Christmas Tree
A white or flocked Christmas tree is one of the stereotypical elements of shabby chic Christmas decor. Even though this type of tree is commonly associated with shabby chic decor, I still think about it as an important part of the decor. There are different types of white and flocked trees, including trees without a thick layer of flocking. This allows for different and creative interpretations of this type of tree. A normal green tree can also be used with shabby chic decor. I personally like the way pastel colored ornaments look liked on a dark green tree!
Look for Vintage or Vintage Inspired Decor
Shabby Chic decor is inspired by vintage pieces. No matter if it is furniture or curtains, there is a vintage style to it. If you are looking for shabby chic Christmas decor and can’t find the right style, look at vintage examples. The time period shabby chic decor is commonly associated with is Victorian and Edwardian. So, look for decor in those time periods. Sadly, vintage decor, and vintage pieces in general, are very expensive. In order to stay on a tight budget, look for modern decor inspired by the vintage decor. In order to recognize the styles of Christmas decor and their time periods will require research. Yet, it will help to recognize what would fit in the stye and what won’t while shopping.
Buy Decor to Repaint and Customize
If you find something that looks like it would fit in the shabby chic style, yet isn’t the right color, consider customizing it. Sometimes, saying customizing something can mean multiple reasons. What I’m talking about is to repaint the decor in a different color. In this case, something shabby chic appropriate. This may not work for every decor, but for some it may be a better, more cost efficient option than waiting and purchasing something at a higher price point. Do research into the kind of materials the item is made out of and how well they take certain types of paint, glue, ect.
Well, that’s all for now! Thank you for reading!
