The New Reason Why I Decided to Unfollow Certain Content Creators (And Why It Has to Do With Religion)

Have you ever followed someone online, but over the time their posts (or content depending on what you want to call it) change and you start to no longer enjoy following them? In all the years I’ve been blogging and using social media I probably did this to my followers, but as a fan of people I find online, I felt this way many times before.

For many years, I’ve found people I liked, followed, and then ended up unfollowing them after what they post changed in a direction I didn’t agree with. Even though this has happened many times over the years, I began to have a harder time with certain people online I stopped following in the past few years. The reason why I decided to stop following them is because they began to use inspiration that I don’t agree with.

I can watch plenty of content created by a variety of people who have different ideas and perspectives without a problem. Yet, sometimes the topics, ideas, and other things just bother me too much for me to continue following them. In the case of some of the content creators I stopped following include Pagan ideas and symbols. Although there are many other things now included in their content, I wanted to focus on the Paganism in their conetn.

I am a Christian, but I’ve been exposed to enough Pagan ideas, symbols, and sometimes philosophies over my life that I’m not very bothered by them. (Otherwise I’d struggle with attending Renaissance Festivals, shopping at certain DYI stores, or shop for homemade candles that help my allergies out) They are not a part of my religion so I don’t need to bother with them. Also, knowing the difference between Pagan symbols and iconography and Christian symbols and iconography is important for me. That way I will know what it is I intend to buy at a Renaissance Festivals, stores that carry items for non Christian religions, ect.

In the case of these content creators I no longer follow, they started to go on a Pagan type tangent that surprised me. What also surprised me is how fast the content changed and how it changed. Again, I’m not naive to Paganism, but I am also not an expert. Yet, I know when someone changes their content that focused on being non religiously bias to becoming more heavily influenced by it. I can also see when their content reflects their… well… lack of understanding about Paganism.

Again, I’m not an expert, but after talking to anyone who practices Paganism, they have a way of talking about certain things. Specifically, things that are important to their beliefs such as nature. As for the content creators I no longer follow, I was shocked to hear how they talk about nature yet use symbolism important to Paganism.

The reason why I used to follow the content creators is due to my search for how to make homemade things. These things include bread, baked deserts, handicrafts, and more. I’m searching for this information for a variety of reasons, including recipes I can use to make food without ingredients I’m not allergic to. I stumbled across them during my search, liked what they presented, and decided to follow them for a while to see what else they will make.

In my opinion, I think the reason why these content creators I no longer follow use Paganism in their content is not because they actually are practicing Pagans. I think they are just using Paganism as a style asthetics for their online profiles. Of course, this is a stupid thing to do. Not only will someone offend real, practicing Pagans, they will offend me who isn’t a Pagan, but is a Christian and is very concerned about what they expose and surround themselves with. To watch a video with such slick and photogenic looks that promotes someone’s lifestyle with symbolism that isn’t consistent with their actual religious and lifestyle makes me angry and frustrated.

I know not everyone has a life they think will be social media worthy, but to use a religion that is not their own so they can create a following makes me upset. It makes me question so many other aspects of their life. It also makes me question why this person whats to be online and have a large following so badly.
