Gift Ideas for Sewers- Part 1

As we inch our way closer to Christmas, I wanted to write a few more posts dedicated to gift ideas. I really enjoy writing these posts, so it is an easy way for me to create content during Blogmas.

For this post, I wanted to dedicate it to sewers. I am a sewer myself so I understand how hard it can be to find the right sewing oriented gift.

While working on this post, I realized I had so many ideas for gifts that I decided to split the ideas into two different posts. Look for part 2 coming soon!

And with that out of the way, here are the gift ideas for sewers!

Sewing Machine or Serger

If you want to splurge for a gift, consider purchasing them a sewing machine or serger. There are both new and old models available that would make great gifts. Just remember what they usually like to sew (Quilts, clothes, ect.) and what their experience level is. Make sure to purchase one accordingly. Also, if the recipient of the gift needs a machine with a special setting or abilities, make sure the machine has them. Finally, make sure to know the return policy on gifts like sewing machines and sergers.

Sewing Machine Needles (Uncommon Versions)

Unlike common sewing machine needles, (Which I will get into later in this post) uncommon needles could be a great surprise gift. Examples of uncommon needles include twin needles, (A needle with two needles that is joined together at the top. This way it can be used by a sewing machine with the ability to sew with one needle.) titanium needles, (They hold a point longer than standard needles) and other needles not easily found or used.

Thread (Uncommon Versions)

Just like with needles, thread is a great gift option for sewers. If you want to make your gift stand out, try to look for thread that is less common. The less common threads I am talking about are not white or black all purpose threads. Instead, look for other threads such as special effect threads or silk threads. If you want to get them in a more useful color so they could potentially be used, please consider buying them in black, white, gold, silver, or any neutral color that would blend in with dark or light colored fabrics.

Tailor’s Chalk

Tailor’s chalk is used to mark fabric without making the markings permanent. Normally, the chalk can be brushed off or washed very easily, leaving no markings on the final project. This too is not something sewers have, but when they have it they use it. This is why I think buying tailor’s chalk is a great idea for a present. The chalk comes in different colors in order to mark different colored fabrics. If someone has a chalk allergy or sensitivity, there are different types of chalk holders and variations of chalk (Including pencils and pens with disappearing ink) that will make marking fabric better for them.

High Quality Scissors

Scissors are an essential part of sewing. Usually scissors are used by clothing makers, but quilters also need and use them. This is why gifting a high quality pair of scissors is a great all around gift idea. The options for scissors comes in economical versions to very expensive scissors. Just make sure you read reviews and do research about the scissors before purchasing them. Some can be quite expensive, but like knives, the cost of the scissors is an indicator of the quality of the steel.

Indi Company Sewing Patterns

If you’ve done research about pattern companies, you may discover there are terms about them. For purposes of this post, I will talk about two of these names. The first is called The Big Four and they are four pattern companies that are easily found in stores. (Brands are Simplicity, Vogue Patterns, McCall’s, and Butterick, but there are other brands that are included in The Big Four. Mostly because of the easy accessibility and that they are owned by the same parent company as previously mentioned brands.) The second is Indi Brand Patterns. Indi brand patterns is not an actual name of a company. It is just a name given to the brands that are independent (or Indi) sewing pattern brands. These brands are harder to find in store (You will probably need to go online to purchase them) and cost more than them more common pattern companies. This is why these patterns would make great gifts. Also, by purchasing these patterns you will be supporting a small business!
