Becoming a Bookworm and Why I Fell in Love With Reading
Lately, I’ve had the time to read a lot. I enjoy reading, but there were times in my life I absolutely hated reading. Today, I would call myself a bookworm, but I had to grow into loving to read. For today’s post, I want to talk about how I became a bookworm and why I fell in love with reading.
When I was in elementary school, I hated reading. I struggled with spelling and had a terrible time reading out loud in class. No matter how much studying and practice I put into spelling and reading out loud both in class and outside of it, I struggled with it. Now that I’m an adult and know more about schools, teaching styles, and more (I seriously considered becoming a teacher in my teens, so I took education classes to see if I’d like to pursue it as a degree and career.) I know why I was struggling so much with spelling and reading out loud, but back then I had no clue what was going on. All I knew was I failed, and I hated reading because of it.
As I got older, I began to enjoy reading because of the stories. I still struggled with spelling and reading out loud, but I began to love reading books that I picked. Especially if these books had nothing to do with class work!
After graduating from high school, I began to grow into a full fledged bookworm. While others from my graduating class would spend their extra money on going out and having fun, I spent my money on books to read. And I’ve been in love with reading ever since!
So, why did I fall in love with reading when I struggled with it and even hated it as a child? It’s because of the stories
My whole life, I watched adventure and science fiction movies. When I was a child, I loved to watch cartoons on VHS tapes of Superman and Batman. I loved Back to the Future and Star Wars. My family regularly watched Star Trek and other science fiction and adventure TV shows. The older I got, the more movies I could watch because I was old enough to watch them. After a while, my family ran out of movies and TV shows to let me watch for the first time. Still, I wanted to watch more new movies because of their stories.
Around that time, I began to have the chance to ask my family and even buy my own books. I began to make an effort to find books with a similar story to the ones in the movies I loved. Because there were more books I never read than movies I never watched, I began to read more and more. Over time, I began to fall in love with reading
Today, I still don’t spell certain words well (According to studies I read, these words are very common to misspell) and I still hate reading out loud, but I’m better than I used to be. Despite these things, I work around them whenever I can and learned how to make myself remember them better. Even though I had major roadblocks to love reading, I can now say I love reading! I’m always excited to walk down the book section and look for new books with stories that peak my interest. I don’t read very quickly, but I enjoy reading anyway
Well, that’s all for now! Thank you for reading!
