Movie Review: A Christmas Love Story (2019)
In 2019, the Hallmark Channel announced one of their new movies for their Countdown to Christmas will be a movie called A Christmas Love Story. It interested me, but I didn’t think about watching it until I found out one of the stars of the movie is Kristen Chenoweth. I am a fan of Kristen Chenoweth, so I knew I would like to watch the movie. Unfortunately, I did not have the Hallmark Channel so I waited until the movie was released on DVD to watch it.
The movie stars Kristen Chenoweth, Scott Wolf, Keith Robinson, and Kevin Quinn. The movie’s web page on the Hallmark Channel website, the plot is as follows…
Tony Award-winning Kristin Chenoweth stars as a youth choir director who needs to write a big song for a Christmas Eve show. She is distracted from her task when a boy with a golden voice joins her choir, which comes as a surprise to his widowed father, portrayed by Scott Wolf.
The movie also includes singing by Chenoweth and Robinson.
The movie was very enjoyable. It follows the plot synopsis given on the Hallmark Channel website fairly well without giving away too much of the plot of the movie. Kristen Chenoweth and Scott Wolf work well together as the couple falling in love with each other. Keith Robinson played Wolf’s character’s son very well and Kevin Quinn was wonderful as the pianist at the school Chenoweth’s character works at.
The story starts out as a cute love story, similar to the way other Hallmark Christmas movies do, but as the movie continues, the story becomes more complicated. Chenoweth’s character starts to reveal a back story that has a major impact on her love life as well as her budding relationship with Wolf and Robinson’s character. Although I could go into more detail about the plot, I decided to keep this review as spoiler free as possible. Because of this, I decide not to talk about what happened to Chenoweth’s character.
This back story creates a plot twist that took me by surprise in the best possible way. The plot twist was sad and, even though I knew the movie would end on a high note, it is so well written and acted out it was hard for me to figure out how the movie would achieve a happy ending. The movie still ends with a happy ever after ending, but how the movie got to that ending is different than other stereotypical movies from the Hallmark Channel. This made the movie stand out to me as one of the most unique Christmas movies I watched so far from Hallmark. Also, due to the plot twist, A Christmas Love Story is one of the most sad a bittersweet movies I ever watched from Hallmark as well.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves Kristen Chenoweth, wants to hear beautiful music, a heartwarming story, and a story that has a happy ending but is unconventional to the stereotypical plot of the Hallmark Channel Christmas romance movies.
Well, that’s all for now! Thank you for reading!
