Book Review- Caviar: The Hollywood Star by Megan Hess

Author and artist Megan Hess has wrote many books over her career, but my favorite books has become her children’s books. Even though I don’t own every book she has wrote or illustrated, I really love the books I own. One of the newest additions to my collection is Caviar: The Hollywood Star.

The book was released in April 2023, but after owning and reading it for over a year, I decided to write a review about it. It is a part of the world of Claris, Megan’s very popular and fashionable mouse and star of most of her children’s books.

This is what the front of the book looks like…

I really love the art deco inspired frame on the front of the book.

Inside the book, the illustrations are detailed and are cute…

Megan Hess is known for her fashion illustrations so it is no surprise there are fashion illustrations in her books. In the case of Caviar, one of the illustrations are of Caviar’s owner dressing her up in different outfits to match with her handbags…

Since Caviar is a part of the Claris: The Chicest Mouse in Paris series, there is an appearance of characters from the original series. In this case, it is Claris, Monsieur, and The Brat being… well… a brat…

The book’s synopsis from Amazon is…

In the Hollywood Hills lived the cutest canine.
Her name? Caviar, and she was DIVINE.

Caviar is a charismatic Californian chihuahua with a flair for the dramatic. But her owner just wants her to be a perfect, polished socialite.
Can Caviar play the role of a lifetime and stay true to herself?

The pacing is really good for the target age group (Ages 3 and up) and has a happy ever after. Caviar’s personality is consistent with many chihuahuas. She reacts to small things with a dramatic, and loud, flair. The way she struggles with being herself and making her owner proud and happy with her is something many children can relate to. Also, children can relate to Caviar’s journey to learn how to be herself, including when she can be loud and dramatic without getting in to trouble.

I really like this book. It has pretty illustrations and I love the message about being yourself. I don’t own many children’s books that have a message about being yourself, making this book a great book to add to a children’s book collection. I can see little girls, especially ones interested in fashion, and boys with interest in acting or are more extroverted than their peers enjoying this book.

That’s all for now! Thank you for reading!
