5 Magazines I Still Purchase (And Reread After I Buy Them)

I love books, but I don’t always like to buy them. They can be quite expensive and I don’t normally like the story. Because of this, I sometimes feel like buying books all the time is a waste of money for me. Although this rings true for books, I have a major weakness for magazines. Especially sewing, knitting, and cooking magazines. I believe if books contained the information the magazines I usually read, I would buy them more often and not feel so guilty about them. Yet, they don’t.

While going through my old magazines to see if there are any issues I don’t want to keep anymore, I began to see all the magazines I kept and why I picked them. I narrowed my favorites down to five magazines brands and types of magazines, that I bought the most and keep rereading. Although all my favorite magazines are not for everyone, nor is reading magazines, I think many will find it interesting which ones I still buy and enjoy reading.

Victoria Magazine (Or Bliss Victoria)

Victoria magazine, sometimes known as Bliss Victoria, is a lifestyle magazine that focuses on a romantic way of living. It was founded in 1987 but was relaunched in 2007 and is still in publication today. Growing up, I would see the magazine for sale and wished I could purchase one. I liked shabby chic and romantic style everything back then, so this magazine was right up my alley. As I grew older, I began to collect some of the issues that caught my attention or liked when I was a child. Today, I still sometimes buy new issues Victoria and enjoy reading the old magazine I already own.

Threads Magazine

I discovered Threads Magazine when I was a teenager. Back then, I started to push myself to become better at sewing. Threads Magazine became one of my most favorite sewing magazines to buy and read. It was a fountain of information about anything sewing related. The variety of topics is covers is anything from mastering beginner sewing techniques to how vintage dresses were constructed to haute couture sewing techniques. I don’t always see them for sale in stores, which is my preferred way of buying them because I can read some of the articles before I purchase it, so I haven’t been able to purchase any new issues in a while. Even though I’m lacking in recent issues of Threads Magazine, I am happy to own and reread my old issues.

Burda Style

Another sewing magazine I love to buy is Burda Style. It is a German sewing magazine that is published in different languages, including English. It is a harder to find magazine because of how it is distributed in the United States. I used to find copies at JoAnn, but all the stores closed earlier this year so I rely on the internet. The reason why I search for this magazine and am happy to hut for it is because it isn’t just a sewing magazine. It does have tips for sewing as well as style trends that could be used to make a trendy wardrobe, but I love something else about it: It has sewing patterns in it.

In every issue of Burda Style, there are at least ten sewing patterns to use in it. They come in a variety of sizes and instructions on how to make them is included in the issue. For around $17 USD (Without shipping or tax), this is a major bargain for home sewers. (Just for reference, a sewing pattern purchased normally from one of the best known American brands costs around $16- $40-ish USD per pattern without tax or shipping. There are sales that drop the price to less than $5 to no more than $10, but usually they happened at sewing and craft stores such as JoAnn or on the pattern companies’ website.)

Quilting Magazines

The last sewing magazine I love to buy and read are quilting magazines. There various magazines I like to look at, but I like to buy them in order to keep them with the plans of making the quilts in the future. Some of the brands I like to buy are McCall’s Quilting, Better Homes & Gardens American Patchwork & Quilting, and Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting.

Cooking Magazines

The last magazine I like to buy are cooking magazines. Although I would prefer to buy cook books, I like the magazines as well. I like to focus on buying magazines that focus on certain topics such as holiday cooking, specific ingredients, and recipes that are for people with food allergies or other health issues.

That’s all for now! Thank you for reading!
