Reminiscing & Wondering Where the Children’s Chocolate Advent Calendars Are Sold Today

Ever since I was a girl, I loved advent calendars. I usually had the calendars with chocolate in them. Every day in December, I would open a new window, find the chocolate, and eat it. When I had a major health crisis as a teenager, I decided to make myself a bucket list of things I wanted to do before I became to sickly to do them. One of the simplest ones was to buy a chocolate advent calendar for children and eat all the chocolate in one sitting. I ended up doing this years after the health crisis. I did this for only one time, but have no regrets about doing it!

Today, I see many types of advent calendars for sale. Among them are Legos, Disney toy collectables, and other toy brands. I’ve seen advent calendars for adults featuring beauty products, books, and socks. I’ve seen food based advent calendars and ones I just don’t understand who the target audience is, but there it is. There are also advent calendars that are for fans of certain movies and TV shows. These include Harry Potter, Gilmore Girls, and Wicked: For Good. (If you haven’t heard, Wicked: For Good has so many brand deals that it makes sense they would have a tie in advent calendar)

Yet, after browsing all these calendars I realized something: I didn’t see any chocolate advent calendars for children.

This year, when I went to Walmart or to any grocery store, I would browse their advent calendars. After my chocolate advent calendar binge, I’ve been pretty happy about avoiding advent calendars. Yet, there are times when I wonder if there are calendars that I just might like to buy. So far there hasn’t been any calendars that tempt me to purchase it. Yet, I was really surprised there weren’t any chocolate children’s advent calendars. In fact, there weren’t any chocolate advent calendars available to purchase.

I wondered if this was because the stores are trying to encourage a healthier lifestyle (Or I just missed them or they sold out…) and if they were available online. After a quick browse on Walmart’s website, I couldn’t find any chocolate calendars sold from Walmart. (Walmart’s website acts is a marketplace for third party seller to sell on it. I used the filter to make sure all the advent calendars I saw on Walmart is sold and shipped by Walmart.) Since Walmart doesn’t have anything online, I looked at Amazon instead. I found a Lint calendar, a Ferrero Collection calendar, and a Reece’s Pieces calendar. I also found at lest four chocolate calendars in the style of the calendars I’m looking for. They are still available to purchase for a similar price I remember they would cost. (They have gone up a few dollars, but it’s still not an unreasonable price) Yet, they weren’t available at the stores I normally shop at.

To be honest, I don’t know what is going on. Is it something different in the area where I live that makes it hard to sell these types of calendars? Or is it something else, such as stores within a certain driving distance that sells these types of calendars? I can’t tell, but I was really surprised by this.

Even though I don’t buy advent calendars, and I will not be repeating my chocolate advent calendar binge ever again, (Especially after I found out I have food allergies to some of the ingredients in store bought chocolate) I am still surprised by this. Chocolate advent calendars used to be really popular in the area where I live. Now they are not. I have wondered if their popularity has decreased due to the economy and the lack of parent’s disposable income, but based off other things I see for sale at the stores and how quickly they sell out, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

It seem like an odd thing to get worked up about, especially since I don’t have children, but I care about my friends’ children and I want to see what kind of toys and other fun things are still available to purchase for them. It’s odd to see this popular way to celebrate Christmas for children has disappeared for sale in my area, sans online. Ordering chocolate online can also be a serious issue, especially when it comes to chocolate melting before it arrives.

I don’t know what to say about this. There are plenty of other advent calendars to pick from for children, but I do long to see the chocolate ones. If I had children, I would give them chocolate advent calendars for Christmas. It makes me sad to see something I would’ve given my own children isn’t available to purchase in store anymore.
