Daily Writing Prompt: When you were five, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I started this blog in 2017, there are several post ideas that I keep thinking about but always decide to not write. One of these post ideas is what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Recently, I found a daily writing prompt about that same subject. After thinking about it for a while, I decided it is time to write a post about what I wanted to do when I grew up.

When I was five years old until high school, I wanted to be an animator. I loved Disney animation and studied the movies to see how they are created. I would also watch TV shows about how animation is created and the process of creating 2D animation. In 2001, I found out on the news Disney would be closing almost all their 2D animation studios and would be focusing on other CGI animation. That was when I felt conflicted about what I should do.

In high school, art classes were available, but I focused on music instead of art. I wish I could’ve taken them, but they only offered a beginner art class and nothing more advanced. It did teach illustration art such as still life, perspectives, and such, but that wasn’t enough to give me a chance to get into a university’s college program. So, I focused on music instead.

Today, there are animation programs I can find easily and use to learn how to create animation. Because of this, I can still learn about animation and create animated videos for YouTube as a hobby. Yet, other than that I doubt I could ever work at Disney. Competition for animation jobs at Disney is pretty extreme, so I don’t know if a self taught animator will be able to get into Disney. Of course, there have been stranger things that have happened, but then again it may not be something I will enjoy.

Still, I want to focus on getting better as an illustrator and learn about modern day animation. I intend it to become my new hobby. It is something I always wanted to learn how to do. Like I said before, there are animation programs that I can find easily (And are reasonably priced) that I can use to get me familiarized with the animation process.

That’s all for now! Thank you for reading!
